Activities – a wealth of things to do on the Tutukaka Coast

Generally, we don’t like to overstate things, but when you stay with us you are spoilt for choice for things to do on the Tutukaka Coast. National Geographic classes this area as one of the top coastal areas in the whole world, and when you book a stay with us, you’ll see why.

With plenty of safe swimming beaches, fishing charters, cafes, restaurants, art galleries and more, there’s a wealth of activities to indulge in – no matter what your interests are.

Things to do on the Tutukaka Coast

Anything to do with water

Our location on the Tutukaka Coast means that you have your pick of things to do on, in or around the water.

We’re only 3 minutes from Tutukaka Marina which gives you access to:

  • Deep sea fishing charters
  • Trips to the Poor Knights Islands
  • Diving & snorkelling
  • Surfing lessons

If you’re into surfing, Sandy Bay and the Ngunguru bar are only 10-15 minutes away.

Coastal and bush walks

One of the best things to do in Tutukaka is to take one of the many walking trails that crisscross this stunning area. With breath-taking coastal and bush views to be seen on every trail, you’ll want to take your camera with you!

A cycle trail is accessible from nearby Ngunguru.

Cafes and eateries

From restaurants in the Tutukaka Marina to fish and chips in nearby Ngunguru or Matapouri, you’re never far away from a cup of coffee, something to eat and opportunities to meet the locals.

Markets and art galleries

If you want to soak in some local culture, there are several excellent markets and art galleries not too far away.

Your host Dave is an avid photographer and landscape artist.  Some of his work is displayed in the guest areas.

Your base for exploring Northland

Only 30 minutes from the city of Whangarei, we’re perfectly placed in Tutukaka to provide an excellent base for exploring Northland in general. There are a number of exciting destinations which are all close enough for day trips, such as:

  • Bay of Islands
  • Kai Iwi Lakes
  • Opononi & Kaipara
  • Waipoua Forest & Tane Mahuta (the largest Kauri tree in NZ)
